Minoxidil is a medication suitable for men and women, to promote growth in thinning hair.
Minoxidil is a popular treatment, used to prevent further hair loss and stimulate regrowth in people with male and female pattern baldness. Minoxidil does not cure baldness or a receding hairline, it is primarily used to increase hair growth. Topical Minoxidil solution comes in two forms; liquid and foam, and can be found in 2 strengths; 2% and 5% as a treatment for hair loss.
Minoxidil works by enlarging your blood vessels. This enlargement allows the hair follicles to receive more blood, oxygen and nutrients.
There are 4 cycles in hair growth: 1. Anagen, 2. Catagen, 3. Telogen 4. and Exogen.
These cycles allow our hair to grow, lie dormant, die and regrow. If you experience hair thinning or hair loss, your hair growth cycle has been disrupted.
For thinning hair, Minoxidil glues that cycle back together. The anagen stage is where you grow healthy hair. This stage is known to last between 3-5 years before the hair enters the next 3 stages. Minoxidil allows your hair follicles to skip these next 3 stages and begins to thicken your hair.
1-2 months During the first 2 months you should be prepared for no visible change, though some may shed more fine hairs than before, this is only temporary and is a normal step in the process.
3-6 months This is a great time to take a photo, so that you can track your progress. You may notice, at this point, that hair loss has slowed, stopped or in some cases even reversed.
6 months+ Hair loss may have slowed considerably or stopped in its tracks. Some people may see signs of regrowth! Want more from Minoxidil?
